“Went to college. Went to help out My Fair Lady – quite good”
George Bernard Shaw’s book Pygmalion provided the basis for Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe’ musical stage show “My Fair Lady”.
The story – as most people know – revolves around Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins so she can pass as a lady. It was later made into a succesful film starring Rex Harrison and (the utterly gorgeous) Audrey Hepburn.
It looks as if my college put on a stage performance of this classic and that, tonight in 1975, I was one of the backstage helper monkeys? All doubtless part of my new status as a representative of the 6th Form Coffee Club committee.
“Wiv a little bit of luck” (see what I did there?) the reviews did not read “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Farce“? Yes, I know, I should have been a Sun headline writer.
