“Went swimming during games. Mum left job in Chandlers Ford”

But, I say again, I’ve never been able to swim. The only certificate I could’ve got was one for “fastest teenage drowning”.

Dad jogged my memory to remind me Mum worked briefly at a newsagent in Chandlers Ford, dispensing newspapers, magazines, cigarettes and bags of penny sweets to partially-toothed schoolchildren.

I don’t mean she dispensed cigarettes to children, but even if she did, back in the day that was not frowned upon. Hell, I was going over the local shop when I was 7 or 8 to buy cigarettes for her!
